What Happens If My Parents Develop Dementia and There Is No LPA in Place?
🧠 What Happens If My Parents Develop Dementia and There Is No LPA in Place? Many families assume that if a parent develops dementia, their spouse or children can automatically step in and manage finances or make important decisions. Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case. Without a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA), families may face delays, legal challenges, and the need to apply to the Court of Protection at a time when they are already coping with a difficult diagnosis. An LPA isn’t about giving up independence—it’s about protecting it. The best time to arrange an LPA is before you need one. The second-best time is today. UTIs are one of the most common issues I come across when supporting people living with dementia, and they can cause some of the most dramatic changes in behaviour.
UTIs & Dementia: What Every Caregiver Should Know 💜 A urinary tract infection (UTI) can look very different in someone living with dementia. Many people don’t develop the classic symptoms of burning or pain when passing urine. Instead, families often notice sudden confusion, increased agitation, hallucinations, unusual behaviour changes, excessive sleepiness, reduced mobility, or a noticeable decline in day-to-day functioning. One family I supported were convinced their mother’s dementia had suddenly worsened. She became frightened, confused, and started seeing people in the house who weren’t there. A urine test later confirmed a UTI. Once treated, she gradually returned much closer to her usual self. For caregivers dealing with recurring UTIs, prevention is often just as important as treatment. Encouraging regular fluids, managing constipation, maintaining good continence care, and monitoring for early signs of infection can all help reduce the risk. Many people in the United States use AZO products for symptom relief and urinary health. In the UK, similar alternatives include Ural Sachets for urinary discomfort, Cystocare Cranberry Tablets for urinary tract support, and Optibac For Women probiotics, which may help support healthy urinary and vaginal flora. If your loved one develops a sudden change in behaviour, increased confusion, hallucinations, refuses food or drinks, becomes unusually sleepy, or seems generally unwell, it’s always worth considering whether a UTI could be contributing. Remember: not every sudden change is “just the dementia.” Sometimes the cause is treatable. 💜 You’re doing an amazing job. Small steps can make a big difference.
