Children & Dementia

How can grandchildren stay connected with a grandparent who has dementia without feeling frightened or overwhelmed?

A grandchild may feel unsure when someone speaks or behaves differently. Explain changes in simple, honest words before a visit and invite questions without asking the child to manage the situation. Connection does not depend on remembering names or having a long conversation. Looking at a picture, listening to familiar music or sharing a small activity may feel easier. Keep visits flexible and let both people take a break. Respect anyone who does not want a hug or an activity. An adult should remain responsible for care and safety, and support the child afterwards.
