Family Support

What meaningful activities can help a person with dementia feel connected, valued, and involved?

An activity is meaningful when it connects with something the person enjoys or values. This might be folding familiar clothes, watering a plant, listening to music or simply sitting together. Start with their interests and current energy rather than a fixed programme. Offer a choice, demonstrate one step if welcome and adapt the activity without turning it into a test. Participation can mean watching or listening, not doing every part. Stop if the person looks tired or uncomfortable. Consider individual safety needs, including tools, heat and swallowing, and ask an appropriate professional when unsure.

Example wording: “Would you like to water this plant with me, or just sit here?”
