Why We Created the Multicultural Dementia Family Scripts
Dementia Has No Borders
Dementia does not care about race, culture, religion, language, nationality, wealth, or background.
It affects people in every country, every community, and every family structure across the world.
Yet for many years, dementia education, training materials, books, illustrations, and awareness campaigns have often shown only a small part of the global picture.
At The Dementia Companion and The Dementia Assistant, we wanted to change that.
That is why we created the Multicultural Family Scripts.
Every Family Deserves To See Themselves
When a family looks at a dementia resource, they should be able to recognise themselves.
They should see people who look like them.
Families who speak like them.
Homes that feel familiar.
Traditions they understand.
Food, clothing, faith, celebrations, relationships, and family structures that reflect their own lives.
Representation matters.
When people see themselves reflected in educational materials, they feel included, respected, understood, and welcomed.
Culture Shapes The Journey
While dementia affects the brain in similar ways around the world, culture often shapes how families experience the journey.
Different cultures may have different:
* Family structures
* Expectations around caregiving
* Religious beliefs
* Communication styles
* Living arrangements
* Views on ageing
* Community support systems
* End-of-life traditions
For example:
Some cultures expect multiple generations to live together.
Some cultures see caring for parents as a family duty.
Some cultures rely heavily on faith communities.
Some cultures use storytelling, music, food, and traditions as powerful tools for connection.
These differences matter.
Understanding them helps us provide better support.
Dementia Is The Same. People Are Unique.
Although cultures may differ, the underlying experience of dementia is remarkably similar.
Across every country and every community, families tell us the same things:
* “I want my mum.”
* “I want to go home.”
* “Who are you?”
* “Where is my husband?”
* “I need help.”
* “I’m scared.”
* “I miss my family.”
The words may be spoken in different languages.
The homes may look different.
The traditions may be different.
But the emotions behind them are often the same.
Fear.
Love.
Loss.
Confusion.
Connection.
The need to feel safe.
The need to belong.
The need to be understood.
Dementia is universal.
Human emotions are universal.
Building Understanding Through Stories
The Family Scripts were created to help families understand what might be happening beneath the words.
Instead of focusing on correction, they focus on connection.
Instead of asking families to argue with dementia, they encourage them to understand the feelings underneath.
Every script explores:
* Why someone may be saying something
* What they may really mean
* What not to say
* What to say instead
* Connection Before Correction
* Practical support strategies
* Family reflections
The goal is simple:
To help families feel less alone.
Why Diversity Matters
Our world is beautifully diverse.
The dementia community should reflect that diversity.
That means including:
* Black families
* South Asian families
* East Asian families
* Middle Eastern families
* African families
* Indigenous communities
* White families
* Mixed heritage families
* Multigenerational households
* Families of all faiths and backgrounds
No single culture owns dementia.
No single community experiences it alone.
We are all part of the same global dementia family.
Learning From One Another
One of the most powerful things about creating multicultural scripts is that families begin learning from each other.
A family in Nigeria may recognise something familiar in a story from Japan.
A family in Australia may connect with a story from India.
A family in South Africa may understand a challenge experienced by a family in Canada.
Because beneath culture, language, and geography lies something deeper:
Human connection.
A Global Mission
The Multicultural Family Scripts are more than educational resources.
They are a celebration of humanity.
They remind us that while our cultures may be different, our desire to love, care, protect, and support those living with dementia is shared across the world.
Every family matters.
Every culture matters.
Every story matters.
Because dementia may affect memory, but it never removes our need for kindness, dignity, belonging, and love.
And love is a language every culture understands.
