The Dementia Assistant®: The Journey from Version One to Version Two
The Journey Between Version One and Version Two
Some stories are about technology.
This one isn’t.
This story is about learning, persistence, and reaching a point where vision and reality finally meet.
When I first imagined what would eventually become The Dementia Assistant®, I didn’t know anything about websites. I didn’t understand web applications, databases, AI models or software architecture. I couldn’t explain APIs, hosting, deployments or user authentication.
What I did understand was dementia.
I understood families.
I understood carers.
I understood what it feels like when someone needs help and the support simply isn’t there.
That was enough to begin.
Version One — Built on Passion
Version One was created by someone with a vision but very little technical knowledge.
Looking back now, I can see all the mistakes.
Everything was built on top of everything else.
Features appeared because they seemed like good ideas at the time.
Pages were added.
Tools were added.
Content grew.
But underneath it all, there wasn’t a true foundation.
Many things looked like they worked.
Some things genuinely did help.
Others simply represented ideas that hadn’t yet been properly designed.
It was exciting.
It was frustrating.
It was chaotic.
Most importantly, it proved one thing:
The idea mattered.
People understood the vision even when the technology wasn’t ready to deliver it.
Version One wasn’t a failure.
It was my apprenticeship.
It taught me lessons that no book, course or university could ever have taught.
Learning an Entirely New World
Creating software without a background in software is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced.
Every day introduced a new word I’d never heard before.
Every problem uncovered another layer of complexity.
At times it felt impossible.
Then AI entered the picture.
Not as something that replaced people.
But as something that could teach me.
Suddenly I wasn’t learning alone.
I could ask questions.
Challenge ideas.
Explore possibilities.
Learn concepts that once seemed completely beyond my reach.
I still don’t consider myself a software developer.
I’m still learning every single day.
But I now understand enough to ask better questions, challenge assumptions and make decisions that protect the vision.
Version Two — Built, Tested, and Ready
Version Two is completely different.
The biggest difference isn’t just what users can see.
It’s what sits underneath — and now, everything works.
Instead of continually adding features onto existing ones, everything has been redesigned with structure and purpose.
The customer experience comes first.
The interface has been carefully considered.
The knowledge has been organised.
The content has been rewritten.
The workflows have been rebuilt.
Every feature has been tested.
Every system has been connected.
Every part of the platform now works together as it was always intended to.
For the first time, the platform doesn’t just feel like it has strong foundations.
It has strong foundations.
Version Two is complete.
And it is ready to be launched.
The Brain Behind the Platform
Perhaps the biggest surprise has been artificial intelligence itself.
People often imagine AI as something magical.
The reality is much more fascinating.
Creating the “brain” of an AI system isn’t simply asking it questions.
It’s about teaching.
Organising knowledge.
Creating structure.
Building relationships between information.
Testing.
Refining.
Starting again.
Repeating that process hundreds of times.
What once felt experimental is now structured.
What once felt uncertain is now reliable.
The intelligence behind the platform has been shaped with intention, care and continuous learning.
I still don’t fully understand everything happening beneath the surface.
Perhaps I never will.
Technology moves so quickly that complete understanding may always be just out of reach.
But I’ve realised something important.
I don’t have to know everything.
I simply have to remain curious enough to keep learning.
Passion Still Comes First
Despite everything I’ve learned, the reason for building this platform has never changed.
It has never been about creating software for the sake of software.
It has never been about artificial intelligence for the sake of AI.
The technology is only the vehicle.
The destination has always been better dementia care.
If a family feels less alone…
If a carer gains confidence…
If a person living with dementia is treated with greater dignity…
Then every late night, every frustration and every lesson has been worthwhile.
Looking Back
Sometimes I smile when I think about Version One.
It was ambitious.
Naive.
Messy.
Imperfect.
And completely necessary.
Without that first version, Version Two could never have existed.
Every mistake became a lesson.
Every failure became experience.
Every obstacle became another piece of knowledge.
Looking Forward
Version Two isn’t just the beginning of building properly.
It is the moment where everything comes together.
The vision is no longer carrying the technology.
The technology is now fully supporting the vision.
The platform is ready.
The systems are working.
The foundation is strong.
And now, for the first time, The Dementia Assistant® is ready to be shared with the world.
And perhaps that’s the greatest lesson this journey has taught me.
You don’t need to know everything before you begin.
Sometimes all you need is a reason worth starting.
Everything else can be learned along the way.
